Mulch Calculator

Calculate how much mulch you need based on area size, depth, and bag size.

How the Mulch Calculator Works

This calculator first determines the total square footage of your project area. For rectangular spaces, it multiplies length by width. For circular areas, it uses the diameter to estimate the total area. If you already know your square footage, you can use the custom area option instead.

After the area is calculated, the selected mulch depth is converted from inches into feet. The calculator then estimates the total mulch volume in cubic feet and cubic yards. If you choose a bag size, it also converts the result into the number of bags needed.

Should You Buy Bagged or Bulk Mulch?

Bagged mulch is usually easier for small garden beds, touch-ups, and areas that are hard to access. Bulk mulch is often better for larger landscaping projects because it can reduce packaging waste and may be easier to spread over wide areas.

For most home garden beds, round up slightly so you have enough mulch to cover uneven areas, edges, and settling after watering or rainfall.

How Much Mulch Do You Need?

The amount of mulch needed depends on:

  • length of the area
  • width of the area
  • depth of mulch

Increasing depth even slightly can significantly increase how much mulch is required, so accurate calculations are important.

Best Mulch Depth (How Many Inches You Need)

Vegetable Gardens

2–3 inches for moisture retention without over-saturation

Flower Beds

2–4 inches for weed control and appearance

Trees & Shrubs

3–4 inches, but keep mulch away from the trunk

Walkways & Landscaping

3–4 inches for strong coverage
